As promised we will continue with a monthly theme for worship to help us draw closer to God and be transformed by Him. The theme for February is "Humility."
I have to say that it's not easy to define or recognize real humility and I am realizing that I know less about it than I thought. It is not something we are born with, but is a quality that is developed over time. It is not listed as a fruit of the Spirit, but upon reflection it really is the sum of them all. If I am walking in love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and self control where is there room for pride?
Humility begins and is defined by the words of Jesus: "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of God."
The problem that we as humans face is that we crave control and we think we know what will fulfill us and make us happy. We are prone to self sufficiency and relying on our own skills, talents, etc to get us through life. We set our goals and climb our mountains only to discover that what the world offers doesn't satisfy for long.
God has offered us abundant life through Jesus but it can only become ours through the Spirit. In order to be filled we must be emptied first. The God who made me knows how to quench my thirst for living water and satisfy my soul. As He has given all of Himself to me He wants me to offer all of myself to Him. He is asking me to surrender my life to Him which is my true worship.
The call to worship God through singing and music is all through the Bible. Our time of corporate worship on Sundays is sacred to God. Prayer, singing, kneeling and lifting of hands is the way we humble ourselves and exalt Him at the start of each new week. Continue to enter in and give Him your heart.
