All of us want to be blessed in life. We want to be loved, to prosper and to be healthy and whole. We desire strength and wisdom to deal with life’s challenges. Every day we are bombarded with images of "the good life" and "the best life." The world is full of advice on how we can achieve that. There are self-help books everywhere, many of which have excellent teaching on life skills.
But, as Christians, we want more than just personal fulfillment. We want a life that is pleasing to God, a life where blessings truly flow from Him.
Psalm 1 offers us a promise, as well as a warning. We are not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly. Any wisdom we gain should, at the very least, agree with the principles of God's Word. The word "blessed" in Psalm 1 means "happy are those who walk the straight path.” It means to be owned, saved, protected and championed by the Lord. It means God is with us and in us and we are totally satisfied in His goodness. It means favour and intimacy with the Holy Spirit. We are blessed because we meditate on and delight in God's Word and choose to obey it. We are like "trees planted by the rivers of water that bring forth fruit in season, whose leaf will not wither, and whatever we do will prosper." (Psalm 1:3)
